So, sadly to say I developed quite a bit of a condition last year. I spent more than my normal amount of time sitting at my desk on the computer and it resulted in a terrible case of flatassicus and a related minor problem of crane neck. Those are my technical terms for the flat butt and kinked neck I got from spending too many hours a day on my derriere staring at my monitor. I tried several things throughout the year to combat the progression; like using wireless externals (keyboard and editing pad) to reduce the stress angles on my elbows and neck, replacing my desk chair with an exercise ball, wearing a smart device that alerted me every 45 minutes to stand up and stretch. None of these changes were a magic fix and since I will continue to be spending multiple hours a day on my computer, I looked into other options.
I already have a beautiful desk I love so I didn’t want to replace that. However, I quickly found Varidesk.com which seemed to be the right solution. I ordered the two- tiered desk from their Pro Plus line and have just loved it. They’ve got sizes and prices to fit any desk or budget. As their website says, the desk comes fully assembled and ready to use. You just place it atop your existing desk and set your level (there are 11 height options on the one I got). It’s very well made and feels completely stable even at the highest height. I wasn’t sure how comfortable I would be adjusting it up and down with my monitor, laptop, external hard drives and all the other junk I keep in my workspace. No need to worry! Adjustments are simple and smooth even when it is loaded up. You’ll also need to consider buying a comfort mat for all the standing you will now be doing. I bought the ActiveMat from Varidesk rather than just buying a gel mat locally because I liked the raised sides that give you options for stretching and changing your weight distribution.
Some reviews said that you will probably need to build up your stamina to standing for long periods of time but I moved my desk chair out immediately and went right to standing. I work out of my home, so I really can find times to take “sitting” breaks if I need them, but it hasn’t been an issue so far.
This is not meant to be a big advertisement for Varidesk, and I have NOT in anyway been compensated for my review. I wish! I wanted to share because I know many people with jobs that keep them tethered to their desk for quite a bit of the day and this product, or something like it, may be really beneficial. I made a quick little video to give you a peak of the desk and mat in my office.
